Employees from the sector in the finals of the National Employer Services’ (NES) Learners First Awards!

Finalists Chase Richards, Nick Waite and Rachael Hoyle will be flying the flag for the science, engineering and manufacturing industries at the National Employer Services’ (NES) Learners First Awards due to be held on 3rd April 2008 at Alton Towers.

Richard has been recognised for his skills and achievements in the workplace having completed an engineering Apprenticeship with Veolia-Dalkia in Staines. Today he is a mobile engineer for hospitals in Sheffield.

Nick has been nominated for an Advanced Apprenticeship award in recognition for his achievements as an apprentice engineer with Selex S&AS Ltd. in Basildon.

Rachael has been recognised for her skills and achievements as an apprentice at BAE Systems in Lancashire, and is nominated in the Advanced Apprenticeship category. She is currently working towards her BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering at Manchester Metropolitan University.

The Learners First Awards recognise the achievements of individuals employed by large (5000+ employees) businesses who hold training contracts with NES. These learners have excelled in their work-based learning programmes, many of whom have overcome significant challenges to do so. The awards also recognise the achievements of their employers who, by making and fulfilling their Skills Pledge and supporting their employees, have demonstrated their commitment to skills development in their workplace.

There are six competition categories this year with one winner in each. Five for individual learners and one for employers.

  • Train to Gain (sponsored by Center Parcs)
  • Skills for Life Award (sponsored by Sainsburys)
  • Personal Achievement Award (sponsored by Tesco)
  • Employer of the Year Award (sponsored by City & Guilds)

The NES, part of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), supports large, national multi-site employers to offer a range of accredited, in-house, work-based learning programmes to their employees.
