Biography - David Gibbs
David joined the Amalgamated Engineering Union
(AEU) in 1963 as an Apprentice Toolmaker. In 1977 David
became the Tool-room Shop-Steward, at British Aerospace Systems –
Brough and in 2000 was elected to the post of AEU Hull District
Secretary.
Through the various mergers which preceded the
inception of Unite the Union, David held the position of Regional
Officer, until 2005 when he was appointed National Officer
responsible for the Steel, Metals & Foundry sectors.
David became the General Secretary of the
Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions (CSEU) on the
1st August 2008. He is a member of the National
Defence and Industry Council, the Leadership Council of the
Aerospace Committee and the Government’s Manufacturing Forum.
As the General Secretary, he is responsible for coordinating the
trade unions within the aerospace, shipbuilding and defence sectors
on a UK wide basis.
David’s hobbies are football, golf &
bowls; he is married with children and grandchildren.
