Biography - Dr David Haywood

David Haywood received his BSc and PhD degrees from the University of Kent at Canterbury, and carried out post-doctoral work in synthetic photochemistry at the University of London, before joining Glaxo as a development chemist in 1980.

He worked on a number of projects in the Chemical Development department before transferring to the Glaxo manufacturing organisation in Montrose, Scotland as a Section Head with world wide technical responsibility for a number of commercial products in 1990.

In 1993 he moved to Singapore to manage the plant and process commissioning of the new multi-purpose facility at Glaxo’s site.  Upon completion of this work he moved back to the UK and became Technical Department Head at Glaxo’s cephalosporin manufacturing facility in Ulverston, Cumbria.

Following the merger with Welcome, he also took on responsibility for the technical department based at Welcome’s Dartford site for the Outsourcing group which had the responsibility for identifying, and carrying out technology transfer to external suppliers of intermediates and Bulk Drug.

He left GlaxoWellcome in 1997 and joined Astra in the UK as the local Head of Process Research & Development.  Over the next few years he developed the UK group before taking over as VP at the Macclesfield Process R&D group following the merger with Zeneca. 

In 2002 David was made Global Vice President of Process Research & Development.  This group currently consists of about 800 staff based on four sites; two in the UK (Macclesfield and Loughborough), one in Södertälje, Sweden and one in Bangalore, India.  There is also a small sourcing group based in Shanghai, China.  In addition to his global role he is also currently Site Manager of the AstraZeneca R&D Charnwood, Chairman of the AstraZeneca India PL Board and Trustee of the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust. 

Outside of AstraZeneca, Dr Haywood sits on the Enterprise Board of Loughborough University and the Board of SEMTA.
