Biography - Philip Whiteman
Philip Whiteman is Chief Executive of Semta, the Sector Skills
Council (SSC) for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing
Technologies.
Semta’s role is to support the business improvement of companies
in the sector by promoting and supporting the development of world
class skills. This role means that Semta are involved in:
- Influencing government skills policy
- Producing high quality labour market information
- Aligning training provision with employer requirements
- Supporting companies with the development of training
plans
Philip chairs the SSC Apprenticeship Policy Group and SSC
Science Cluster, the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Work and Skills
Partnership and is also a member of the STEM Forum and HEFCE SIVS
Group.
He is also a non-executive Director of The Alliance of SSCs,
Stemnet, WISE and various other organisations.
In his younger days, Philip gained a Chemistry Degree at Durham
University before qualifying as a Chartered Accountant. Whilst in
the Finance sector, he worked for five years in the City
bringing SMEs to market and spent two years at a national
newspaper.
He is married with two children, Alexandra and Harry, and spends
weekends with his lovely wife, Cheryl, and his good friend, Buddha
the Pug. He loves sport and has been a lifelong supporter of
Newcastle United Football Club.
